Project Type: New Residential Dwelling
Location: Lowry Bay, Lower Hutt
Located on a coveted waterfront site on the eastern shores of Wellington Harbour, the Lowry Bay house provides a magnificent family home for its proud owners. The ever-changing moods of Wellington Harbour are experienced first hand from a house where the owner rightly insisted on setting the house back from the existing brick wall that provides vital protection from not only the street but the magnificence of the waves and spray that a Wellington southerly storm brings.
The spectacular site of waves crashing over the street as the southerly makes a bee-line from the harbour entrance is balanced with beautiful sunsets, views of the city lights, shelter from the prevailing northerly. Appreciating the variety of considerations presented by the site was the key to the design success, accommodating south east views while maximising access to good sun, balanced with carefully considered relationships with the new house on the rear subdivided portion of the site has created choice of living spaces depending on the owner’s needs. The ground floor living has clearly defined spaces catering for relaxed daily living that connects with the outdoors at different times of day and in different weather conditions, whilst the formal living room provides opportunity for retreat, or in winter a sense of cosiness whilst watching one of those famous storms.
Definitive forms are created through the use of durable aluminium weatherboard cladding and the softness of cedar weatherboards.
This light-filled four-bedroom family home has delighted the owner creating a great place to live while enjoying the wonders of life on Wellington Harbour.
