Catalina Lane House
Project Type: Private Residential
Location: Evans Bay, Wellington
Project Status: Completed
The objective of Catalina Lane was to develop four family-friendly townhouses that have a sense of community, privacy and individuality. The project is unique in that it is a development undertaken by James and Catherine Solari themselves. As an opportunity to experience first hand the challenges of property development, it has positioned the practice with great understanding and respect for the clients that Solari brings value to.
With clever design over 3 levels these townhouses provide light filled efficient living with convenient access to both the city and the eastern suburbs plus dramatic views across Evans Bay and the shared village green.
The unique attribute of the site is the natural topographical bowl that creates a not only a sense space and privacy, but has its own special micro-climate. Sheltered from Wellington’s famous northerly winds it is blessed with being drenched in sun from the moment it rises all year round. The trade of these great features is the challenge of working with a typically Wellington steep hillside. Creating a flat space for the village green required a lot of drainage and earthworks. The result is a unique village green, a triumph that is a large sheltered and sunny space perfect for growing families to enjoy. While Wellington battles with the prevailing Northerly the residents at Catalina Lane enjoy the sunshine with not much more than a gentle breeze. A welcome relief to all.
